Jigsaw Specialist Recruitment is 8!

As I sit here reflecting on the past 8 years, it’s hard to believe how far we’ve come since Robin and I took that leap of faith and started Jigsaw Specialist Recruitment. The journey hasn’t always been smooth sailing, but looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing.

When we made the decision to leave behind our stable jobs and venture into the world of entrepreneurship, we were filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension. With a baby and a toddler at home, a mortgage that suddenly felt a little too big, and renovations in full swing at our new house, it’s safe to say the timing wasn’t exactly ideal.

Walking through that metaphorical “black door” into the unknown was one of the scariest moments of our lives. We had our doubts, our fears, and plenty of sleepless nights. But deep down, we knew we had each other’s backs and the determination to make our dream a reality.

Over the years, we’ve faced our fair share of challenges – from navigating family illness and bereavements, the uncertainty of Brexit, an office fire and a global pandemic. But through it all, we’ve never once regretted our decision to follow our hearts and pursue our passion.

As we look ahead to the future, we’re filled with a sense of gratitude for the incredible journey we’ve been on and the amazing people who have supported us along the way. To our clients, candidates, and our amazing team – thank you for believing in us, for trusting us with your recruitment needs, and for being a part of our story.

The key to happiness is….Contentment, with the small things… it adds up to the bigger picture.

What inspires you? My little boy, he always challenges me to think about things from a different perspective and motivates me to be the best version of myself.

Where would you be in the world right now if you weren’t sat at your desk? Dubai speeding down a ride at the Atlantis Water Park…. Or in Australia catching up with family I have not seen for way too long.

What is your favourite band/singer? I love a DJ as opposed to a specific band so it’s got to be Calvin Harris or Fred Again

What is your favourite movie? Labyrinth

Interesting fact that people don’t know… I have a slight obsession with my Peloton bike, and even got to go to the London studios for a live class

If you could meet anyone for an hour who would it be? My Mum, who is no longer with us, I’d like to know if she’s happy with the way I’ve turned out 😊

What is the best thing that has happened to you this year? As cliché as it sounds, so far its been joining the team here at Jigsaw Specialist Recruitment 😊

What is the favourite part of your job? I love the feeling of offering a candidate a role that’s been a labour of love from all sides

What makes you a successful recruiter? I love building that strong relationship with clients and candidates alike, sometimes it doesn’t feel like a job, which I think is the best kind of job 😊

The Great Resignation

In the aftermath of the pandemic, the professional world entered a period of uncertainty known as the Great Resignation.

While 2023 brought a brief sense of calm, a new trend is emerging. A survey, engaging 1,836 individuals across the UK, gives insight into the dynamics of the workforce in 2024.

The survey found that 49 percent of workers in the UK expressed feeling “quite happy” in their current roles. Despite this contentment, a significant 40% are contemplating changing jobs in 2024. This raises the question: What’s driving this desire for new opportunities?

TOP MOTIVATORS FOR JOB CHANGES

  1. Advancement Opportunities: For 51% of respondents, the lack of personal and career development opportunities is the main reason for considering a job change. Especially in larger organisations, employees feel the pull towards other roles due to limited prospects for advancement.
  2. Salary Stagnation: Over 43% of individuals thinking about changing jobs haven’t seen a salary increase in the past year, emphasising the importance of financial recognition for job satisfaction.
  3. Flexible Working Preferences: The desire for improved flexible working arrangements is another significant motivator, reflecting a shift in expectations regarding work-life balance.

 

RISE IN SECONDARY EMPLOYMENT

A notable finding from the survey reveals that half of the professionals surveyed are either thinking about or have already taken on second jobs. This uptick in secondary employment is primarily driven by economic challenges, particularly impacting women aged 25 to 34 earning between £30,000-£35,000.

 

EMPLOYER RESPONSE TO FINANCIAL CHALLENGES

Encouragingly, the survey signals a positive shift in employer support to alleviate financial burdens. Currently, 54% of employers are offering benefits to ease the cost of living for their employees, up from 48% in the previous year. Especially notable is the initiative taken by large organisations, offering salary enhancements, flexible work options, and one-time payments or bonuses to support their workforce during uncertain times.

 

The surge in job changes underscores the importance for employers to adapt and proactively address the evolving needs and priorities of their workforce. As the Great Reshuffle continues, organisations that prioritise employee satisfaction and wellbeing are likely to navigate these shifts more successfully.

Running a recruitment business with my wife has been one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences of my life. While entrepreneurship comes with its challenges, partnering with my life partner and best friend has added an extra layer of strength, resilience, and shared vision to our journey. Here’s a glimpse into how we’ve built a successful recruitment business together:

Complementary Skills: One of the key reasons for our success is our complementary skills. While I take a lead in client facing and business development, my wife has a knack for being extremely organised and the go to person for all back-office functions. This division of work load allows us to leverage each other’s strengths and cover all aspects of the recruitment process effectively.

Clear Communication: Communication is the cornerstone of any successful partnership, and in our case, it’s even more crucial since we’re not just business partners but husband and wife too. We make it a point to have regular check-ins to discuss our goals, challenges, and upcoming projects. This ensures that we’re always on the same page and working towards a shared vision.

Defined Roles and Responsibilities: To avoid stepping on each other’s toes and minimise conflicts, we’ve clearly defined our roles and responsibilities within the business. This clarity helps us stay focused on our individual tasks while trusting each other to handle their part efficiently.

Work-Life Balance: Running a business together can blur the lines between work and personal life, but we make a conscious effort to maintain a healthy work-life balance. We set boundaries around work hours and designate certain times for family and relaxation. This not only prevents burnout but also strengthens our bond as a couple and allows us to enjoy our (sometimes) amazing children :)!

Mutual Support and Encouragement: Entrepreneurship can be daunting at times, but having a partner who shares your dreams and supports you every step of the way makes all the difference. We’re each other’s biggest cheerleaders, celebrating our successes and lifting each other up during challenging times.

Continuous Learning and Adaptation: The recruitment industry is constantly evolving, and to stay ahead of the curve, we prioritise continuous learning and adaptation. Whether it’s attending industry conferences, investing in new technology, or seeking feedback from clients and candidates, we’re always looking for ways to improve and innovate.

Building a Strong Network: Networking plays a crucial role in the recruitment business, and having two of us allows us to expand our network exponentially. We actively participate in industry events, engage with other professionals, and leverage our connections to attract top talent and clients.

Someone recently sent me Steve Jobs iconic graduation speech. It is well worth a watch if you find the time. At the end he says “stay hungry, stay foolish”. These words really resonated with me! So what does that actually mean?

For me, staying hungry means never losing that spark for learning, growth, and chasing dreams. It’s that constant curiosity that keeps life exciting. 🌟

And staying foolish? It’s about embracing the unknown, taking risks, and being true to your unique journey, even if it feels a bit unconventional.

Have you ever noticed how children have the ability to see the world with clarity and a refreshing simplicity? Recently I was putting together some content for our website. My daughter came up to me and glanced at what I was doing. After a few seconds she said “this picture doesn’t really show that you’re a recruitment company mummy”. Do you know what? She was right! It didn’t!

As grown-ups in a demanding and complex world, we can have the tendency to overcomplicate things, which doesn’t always have the best outcome. Sometimes stripping things back to basics can give us the clarity we need to make the best decisions.

So, next time you’re faced with a complex problem at work, take a moment to step back. Ask questions that others might not have thought of. Tackling challenges with a fresh perspective has become my secret weapon.

Having been in recruitment for more years than I care to remember (20, but let’s keep that quiet!!!), I have recently found myself having to have an awkward conversation with a senior business leader around how and why they need to treat applicants with a mutual respect and flexibility during an interview process. Yes, it is imperative for an applicant to put their best foot forward and show commitment and engagement to a prospective new employer, however this is a two way street and in such a candidate led market, every employer needs to promote themselves and their company in a similar light.
Today’s job market has never been more competitive and treating prospective employees with respect and kindness during the hiring process is not just a courtesy; it’s a strategic imperative. Employers who prioritise a positive candidate experience reap numerous benefits. First and foremost, it creates a lasting impression of the company’s culture and values.
